Why Fall Is the Best Time for IPL and Dark-Spot Treatments in Toronto

By November, summer has mostly faded, but it usually leaves something behind. The sun spots that showed up in July are still sitting on your cheekbones. The freckles across your nose have joined up into patches. Your skin tone looks a little uneven in the flat light of a Toronto afternoon, and makeup doesn't hide it the way it used to.
Here's the good news: the same change in season that makes those marks so noticeable is what makes now the best time to treat them. Toronto's UV index drops to its lowest levels of the year from November through February. You're spending more time indoors, and your summer tan has faded. Together, that makes the next few months the ideal window for IPL and other dark-spot treatments.
Here's why fall is dark-spot season, which treatment fits which kind of pigmentation, and what a realistic timeline looks like if you start this month.

Why is fall the best time to treat dark spots?
It comes down to light. Most treatments that fade pigment work by deliberately stirring up the pigment in your skin so your body can clear it. That's exactly what you want, unless your skin is also getting strong UV exposure at the same time. Then the treated area can respond by producing more pigment, a reaction called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. In other words, treating sun spots in July can sometimes leave you with darker spots than you started with.
Fall takes that risk off the table in three ways.
The UV index is low. From November on, Toronto's daily UV levels are a fraction of what they are in summer. Your skin can heal from each session without fresh sun exposure triggering rebound pigment.
Your tan is gone. IPL works best when there's a clear contrast between the spot being treated and the skin around it. That's why we ask clients not to tan, whether in the sun, a tanning bed or with self-tanner, for four weeks before an IPL session. In summer that's hard to manage. In November it happens on its own.
Aftercare is easier. Healing skin needs to be kept out of direct sun. When most of your day is spent indoors, under a toque or behind a scarf, protecting your skin between sessions takes almost no effort.
There's one more reason, and it's a practical one. If you start in November, you'll be through the most visible part of your treatment plan by the holidays, right when the photos start.
Which dark spots respond to which treatment?
Not all pigmentation is the same, and the right treatment depends on what you're actually seeing. A free consultation with our team is the best way to know for sure, but here's how the three main options line up.
How does an IPL photofacial fade sun spots?
IPL (intense pulsed light) is our go-to treatment for classic sun damage: sun spots, freckles, age spots and blotchy, uneven tone on the face, neck, chest and hands. A handheld device sends gentle pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin, where it's absorbed by the excess pigment. Over the following days, treated spots darken slightly and then flake away, leaving clearer, more even skin underneath.
Each session takes 20 to 40 minutes. Most clients describe it as a quick snap, like a rubber band against the skin, and numbing cream is available if you'd like it. Most people see visible fading after 3 to 4 sessions spaced about four weeks apart. For the most complete, longest-lasting results we recommend a full series, and our IPL package of 6 sessions is built for exactly that. IPL also helps with redness and broken capillaries, so many clients notice an overall brighter, more even complexion, not just fewer spots.
What if it's melasma, not sun spots?
Melasma looks different from sun spots. It tends to show up as larger, hazier patches, often across the cheeks, upper lip or forehead, and it's driven by hormones as much as by sun. It also tends to come back if it's only treated at the surface.
For melasma and dense, stubborn pigmentation, we often recommend Cosmelan. Rather than using light, Cosmelan works by calming the enzyme that drives melanin production. It starts with a professional mask applied in clinic, followed by a maintenance cream you use at home. Many clients see their patches lighten noticeably within the first week, and because it regulates pigment production over time, the results are long-term. If you've been reading about melasma treatments, our skin lightening and brightening treatments page walks through the full range of options.
Can a chemical peel help with dullness and uneven tone?
If your skin looks more dull and uneven than spotty, a peel is often the best place to start. Our Brighten & Glow Chemical Peel exfoliates deeper than a facial, working on both the outer and inner layers of the skin, to brighten tone, soften fine lines and lift mild pigmentation. Downtime is short. Expect some redness and light flaking for a few days. For more stubborn sun damage, the higher-strength Power Glow Peel goes further. Most clients are happy with their results within 1 to 4 sessions.
Many of the best results come from combining treatments, for example a peel to refresh texture and tone alongside an IPL series to target individual spots. We'll build that plan with you.
If you'd like a deeper look at where sun spots come from and how to prevent new ones, our naturopathic guide on how to get rid of sunspots on your face covers it in detail.
What does a fall dark-spot timeline look like?
Here's what a typical plan looks like for a client who starts this month. Your own plan will depend on your skin and the treatment you choose.
November: Consultation and first session. We look at your skin, talk through what's bothering you most, and match you with the right treatment. Your first IPL session (or Cosmelan mask or peel) happens this month. Spots may look a little darker for a few days before they begin to flake away. That's a sign the treatment is working.
December: Spots visibly lighter. Your second session lands about four weeks after the first. By now most clients can see a real difference: spots are lighter, tone is more even, and skin looks brighter in holiday photos.
January: Results settle in. Your third and fourth sessions continue the fade. This is when results start to look complete and the overall evenness of your skin really shows. Depending on how much pigment you started with, some clients continue to a full six-session series into February.
By the time the UV index starts climbing again in spring, the work is done, and your job shifts to keeping it that way.
How can you support your skin from the inside out?
What happens in the treatment chair is only part of the picture. Sun exposure depletes the antioxidants your skin relies on to repair itself, and supporting that repair from within can help your results go further.
Glutathione is your body's master antioxidant. It's naturally depleted by UV exposure, and it plays a role in brightening the skin. Our Glutathione IV delivers it directly into the bloodstream, and many clients pair it with their fall treatment series. Our Hair, Skin & Nails IV supports collagen formation and skin hydration, which matters more than ever once indoor heating kicks in. We wrote about how IV therapy can hydrate your skin from within in more detail earlier this fall.
Food matters too. Colourful fruits and vegetables, especially citrus, berries and leafy greens, give your skin a steady supply of vitamin C and other antioxidants that support healing.
How do you keep dark spots from coming back?
Once you've invested in clearing your skin, a little maintenance goes a long way.
Wear SPF every day, all year. Even in a Toronto winter, UV reaches your skin on cloudy days and reflects off snow. An SPF 30 or higher on your face, neck and hands every morning is the single best way to protect your results.
Be strategic in spring and summer. Reapply sunscreen every two hours when you're outdoors, and add a hat for long days at the beach or on a patio.
Plan a yearly touch-up. Sun damage is cumulative, so most clients come back for one or two IPL maintenance sessions a year, ideally in the fall, to keep new spots from settling in.
