Many unusual and seemingly unrelated bodily symptoms can occur due to heavy metal toxicity. Heavy metals are so named because of their specific gravity (the weight of a substance as compared with an equal volume of water). Some examples of heavy metals include aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Heavy metals may enter the human body via food, water, air, or absorption through the skin. Within our bodies, heavy metals have a toxic effect because they are not readily metabolized and accumulate in the soft tissues.
Common Symptoms: Symptoms of heavy metal toxicity vary widely because these metals can enter every type of cell in the body. Toxicity can result in damaged or reduced mental and central nervous function, lower energy levels, abnormal blood composition, or damage to the lungs, kidneys, liver, and other vital organs. Long-term exposure may result in slowly progressing physical, muscular, and neurological degenerative processes that mimic Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis. Symptoms resulting from chronic exposure are very similar to symptoms of other health conditions and often develop slowly over months or even years.
Chelation (pronounced key-lay-shun) therapy: is a treatment for removing heavy metals from the body. It involves the administration of a chelating agent, which is used to mobilize heavy metals stored in body tissues and increase their excretion in the stool and urine.
At Timeless Health Clinic we use a multi-step approach to ensure a safe and effective Chelation Process:
Step 1: Testing: Before undergoing chelation it is important to identify which heavy metals are present in the body, and what their levels are. This is done through a urine challenge test where urine is collected before and after the administration of the chelating agent to determine the body burden of heavy metals.
Step 2: Preparation: Preparation for the detox process is essential. If the liver and bowels are not functioning properly, many toxins may be reabsorbed from the colon instead of being eliminated.
Step 3: Chelation: The exact chelation protocol will vary from person to person depending on their body type and levels of toxic metals. This process usually involves the administration of the chelating agent, as well as supportive hydrotherapy and intravenous vitamin/mineral injections for maximum effectiveness and tolerability.
Step 4: Re-testing and Maintenance: Re-testing provides a very concrete way of measuring results after chelation therapy. The maintenance program ensures that your body is optimized for handling any toxins and heavy metals in the future, without being overburdened by them.
If you have any questions about the chelation process or would like to discuss it with a Naturopathic Doctor, don't hesitate to contact us.
